After all the election shenanigans, I can’t say I’m not a bit relieved that it’s over…at least it’s over for now. I almost missed Obama’s inauguration. At the last minute, I made a few phone calls for a place to crash and landed my brother-in-law’s friend’s couch (which was a serious upgrade from the only other alternative at the same destination: the floor). We all got up at six a.m. the next morning, that January 20th, 2009, and made our way through the crowded streets towards the National Mall, which had been opened in it’s full length for the first time ever to handle the largest attended event that Washington DC had ever seen.

It was a long wait until eleven a.m. on a particularly cold January morning. With time on our side, my brother-in-law and I decided to part with our group and see how close we could get to the Capitol. It seemed like the best idea at the time. By ten a.m. we had made it through the 7th Street barricades, the 4th Street barricades, and into the ticketed area – for which we had no tickets. We scored ourselves a couple of spots in front of the reflective pool, right next to the Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, from which point this photograph was taken. Those were good times. Especially when it was followed by a cup of very hot chocolate.
